Why it exists
The route bandana,
a map you can sweat on.
This is the one piece nobody else could make, because it comes from the journal. Each edition of the route bandana is printed with the actual topographic contours of one featured run — the switchbacks, the crater rim, the coordinates — drawn in pine green on cream, with the mark in terracotta at the corner.
A bandana is the most honest piece of running gear there is: sweat band, sun shield, dust mask on a dry ridge, ice wrap on a rolled ankle, and a flag on the pack when the day goes right. When the run is done it hangs on a wall and means something. New editions follow the journal — when a run is featured, its contours become printable.
The standard
The standard we set for it: the printed silks and race bandanas collectors keep from the great European trail races — except ours is the map itself.
