400 m of gain in 6 km, with the last part on loose cinder that slides underfoot. The distance is short; the volcano is the hazard, not the trail.

The experience

Around 400 m of climbing on dirt and cinder to a plateau at 2,230 m, then a fast descent on volcanic sand. Short and never technical; the pace is the guide's.

This is the only volcano in the country where the standard tourist route crosses recent lava. The cone is off limits; the flows from 2010, 2014 and 2021 are the trail.

The park was declared in 1963 and is administered with the municipality of San Vicente Pacaya, whose community guides from San Francisco de Sales lead every group; their fee is the village's income from the volcano. Vendors on the plateau sell marshmallows and pizza cooked on hot vents. Fuego and Santiaguito, the country's other active volcanoes, are closed to tourism under the 2026 CONAP norm.

Where the sources disagreeA local guide is mandatory: INGUAT states the hike must be done with an authorised guide, and the municipality assigns one per group at the visitor centre for Q200 to Q300 per group of 10 to 12. Ascent to the MacKenney crater is prohibited on INSIVUMEH's recommendation, and CONAP's resolution 01-15-2026, in force since July 2026, defines the crater and its upper slopes as a closed zone on Pacaya and 25 other volcanoes. The park closes at orange alert; on 16 September 2026 INSIVUMEH's alert was yellow and day hikes were operating. Entry is Q30 for Guatemalans and Q100 for foreigners; older guides still quote Q50. The route is a guided walk, not a timed run: you will run only as fast as your group.

Route sections

01 · The Registration DeskVisitor centre to the forest edge
You register, pay Q30 or Q100, and are assigned a local guide before a step is taken. The trail leaves through cornfields on a wide dirt path.
02 · The Pine ClimbForest edge to the plateau
Two kilometres of constant uphill through broadleaf and pine forest. The Ministry of Culture times it at 35 minutes for a fit walker; runners will be held to the guide's pace.
03 · The Cinder FloorPlateau and lava fields
The trees stop and the ground becomes black cinder and cooled lava with the MacKenney cone above. Vendors roast marshmallows on warm vents; the cone itself is closed on INSIVUMEH's advice.
04 · The Sand RunPlateau to San Francisco de Sales
Loose volcanic sand lets you run the descent in long strides. The guide walks it; ask before you go ahead.
