27 km on a road that never flattens, finishing at 3,475 m, with a start in the dark to make the 4:00 gate and the 13:00 entry cut-off. The surface is loose rock; the cold near the top can reach 0 °C before dawn.

The experience

The climb is on a 4x4 road, never technical but never flat, gaining around 1,900 m to 3,475 m on loose rock and compacted dirt. The park's 4:00 gate and 13:00 entry cut-off shape the day more than the terrain does.

From the summit, on a clear dawn, the Pacific and the Caribbean are in view at once. The mountain is also the water tower of Chiriquí's coffee country, and the road up it is being rebuilt while you run it.

The park is administered by MiAmbiente, Panama's environment ministry, which sets the entry window, the capacity and the guide rule. The summit rock is covered in painted names; the cross on top is the finish line for a dawn pilgrimage of Panamanians and visitors alike. A May 2026 trail race, the Ultra Panamá Trail Series, used the Camiseta road.

Where the sources disagreeMiAmbiente closed the summit road on 7 July 2026 after a landslide at La Nevera, km 10, and reopened it on 14 July 2026 with a warning that heavy rain can trigger new slides or restrictions at any time; check MiAmbiente before you go. A B/.4.3 million rehabilitation of the 12.8 km road runs until March 2027, and vehicle traffic to the summit is restricted to authorised 4x4 operators and guides. MiAmbiente's access notice of December 2023 requires a certified guide and prior reservation for the summit, and its February 2026 notice calls online registration essential, with capacity per shift; PanamaSpot says the Boquete road is walked without a guide in practice. Entry is 4:00 to 13:00 daily and single-use containers are banned inside the park. The Camiseta road was also closed to hikers on 8 and 9 May 2026 for the Ultra Panamá Trail Series.

The park gate opens at 4:00 and stops admitting people at 13:00. The first kilometres climb through coffee country into wet forest on a road already rutted by the night's 4x4 traffic.02 · The FreezerCloud forest to La Nevera

Tropical mountain weather. The tourism authority gives 20 °C to 10 °C in the park and near 0 °C on the summit before dawn. Rain is likely from May to November; mud and landslides follow it. Cloud usually fills in by mid-morning.

MiAmbiente admits summit traffic for nine hours a day

The ministry's access notice sets entry from 4:00 to 13:00, Monday to Sunday, with a certified guide and a prior reservation. Miss the window and the mountain is closed to you until the next morning.
