Rucu Pichincha

Ride a cable car from Quito to 3,947 m, then run a páramo ridge, a volcanic sand slope and a rock scramble to a 4,696 m summit and back, on the mountain with the most rescues in the capital.

The whole route runs between 3,947 m and 4,696 m. The gain is modest at 740 m, but the sand slope has no path, the last third is scrambled on rock with hands, and afternoon lightning and fog reach the ridge; Bomberos Quito count it among the mountains with the most rescues in the city.

The experience

740 m of gain over 10.6 km, all above 3,900 m. Dirt path, then ridge, then volcanic sand with no line, then rock that needs hands for the last third. The air is the first problem and the weather the second.

The TelefériQo, opened on 24 May 2005, carries you 2.5 km up the flank of the volcano in 18 minutes and drops you at the trailhead with the summit in view. Few 4,600-metre summits anywhere start this close to a city centre.

The Pichincha massif gave its name to the battle of 24 May 1822, fought on its flanks, that freed Quito from Spanish rule. The TelefériQo opened on the same date in 2005 and is now the standard start for the Rucu.

Where the sources disagreeThe route lies outside the TelefériQo's property and its guard service; there is no ranger, no registration point and no trail maintenance. Bomberos Quito call the Rucu one of the mountains with the highest rescue incidence in the capital, and 2025 and 2026 have carried the record: four hikers stranded at night on 28 February 2025, a death and an injury at the Cueva del Oso on 22 April 2026, a 200-metre fall on 13 June 2026. On 2 January 2026 an electrical storm suspended the gondola with 200 people at Cruz Loma. The cable car opens at 10:00 Monday to Thursday, which puts a slow party on the summit in the afternoon storm window; go on a Friday or weekend, when it opens at 8:00, and be turning back by 11:00. Bring photo ID for the cable car and never go alone.

Route sections

01 · The Páramo Warm-UpCruz Loma station to the ridge
A wide dirt path through páramo grass and small hills above the cable car. Quito Turismo calls it the place to warm up and feel the altitude; there is a shop at the station and nothing after it.
02 · The Ridge Between Two ViewsRidge to the sand slope
The path narrows and follows the crest, Quito on one side, the Andes on the other. Runnable when dry, exposed to wind and fog, and the place to turn around if dark cloud is building.
03 · The ArenalThe sand slope
A large slope of volcanic sand with no real path, only the footprints of earlier hikers. Two steps up, one back; the metres here cost more than anywhere else on the mountain.
04 · The Last Hundred MetresRock scramble to the summit
The final third is scrambled across rock, with the last 100 m the steepest. Hands on, no gear needed, but on 22 April 2026 a fall near the Cueva del Oso killed one person and injured another.
05 · Last Gondola DownSummit to Cruz Loma
The descent is the same line, the sand slope now a fast ski. The last ticket down is sold at 17:00 on weekdays and 17:30 at weekends; the ride is 18 minutes and the station will not wait.

Weather profile

What the sky
is likely to do.

Equatorial high mountain: cold at the station, colder on the summit, with wind, dense fog and sub-zero temperatures arriving without warning, in the words of Bomberos Quito. Afternoon thunderstorms; a lightning strike killed one climber on 26 November 2023, and a storm suspended the cable car on 2 January 2026.
