The experience

The round trip is 10.8 km with 1,063 m of gain, all of it on the return. The descent is loose volcanic rock on tight switchbacks; the climb finishes at 3,287 m with no shade after sunrise.

Most people take three days to do what a runner does before lunch. The oasis at the bottom has pools and palms and sells lunch; the village at the top has the last bus to Arequipa.

Cabanaconde is the last village on the south rim road, Cabana-speaking and terraced with pre-Inca fields. Autocolca, the Autoridad Autónoma del Colca, sells the ticket that funds the tourist circuit and covers the Salinas y Aguada Blanca reserve and the Valle de los Volcanes as well. The oasis lodges at Sangalle are family-run and the mules that climb the path belong to families in the village.

Where the sources disagreeThe Autocolca tourist ticket is required and is checked at Chivay and on the road; it costs 70 soles for foreign visitors, 40 for Latin Americans and 20 for Peruvians, cash only, single use, and it is not included in tour prices. The trail has no official distance, no marking and no rescue service; the distance here is a mapping-site figure and the oasis altitude differs by 200 m between sources. From December to March the path is slippery with wet rock and mud, and Peru Sites recommends April to November. The sun sets earlier in the canyon than the published time, so the descent is not an afternoon plan without a headtorch. Mules for hire on the climb are the local economy; do not count on one being free when you want it.

Autocolca's tourist ticket costs 70 soles for foreign visitors, 40 for Latin Americans and 20 for Peruvians, with children, students and over-60s at 5 soles for Peruvians. It is valid from the day of purchase, can be used once, and does not include a guide or transport.
