A flat 2.5 km clay loop with no gain to speak of. The only cost is Mexico City's altitude, which the track shares with every run in the capital.

The experience

A flat clay loop of 2.5 km with marked 100-metre straights. Nothing technical and nothing steep; the surface is kinder than the pavement of Reforma next door.

It is the training loop of a city of runners, on the boundary of the country's largest urban park, with the Anthropology Museum as a turnaround.

The track sits beside the Museo Nacional de Antropología, in the oldest section of a park that has been a royal retreat, a battlefield and a public forest. Pro Bosque de Chapultepec, a private trust, works with the city's environment secretariat on the park's upkeep and rehabilitated the track and its surrounding green areas.

Where the sources disagreeThe published lap length is not settled. Pro Bosque de Chapultepec states 2.5 km; the running directory En Dónde Correr lists a 1 km track with a 2.5 km outer lap; older press quotes 2 km. Hours also differ by source: Pro Bosque says open 24 hours, En Dónde Correr and Chilango say 6:00 to 22:00. The circuit lies outside the fenced Primera Sección, which Pro Bosque lists as open Tuesday to Sunday from 6:00 to 17:00 with no dogs; do not plan a loop around the lake inside the fence on a Monday. There are no toilets at the track. The city's altitude is the one real cost on a flat loop.

Route sections

01 · The Clay StartRubén Darío gate to the first straight
Soft red clay under a canopy that keeps the sun off until mid-morning. The kerb marks the edge of the track; the lampposts run its length.
02 · The HundredThe 100-metre straights
Marked 100 m straights let you run strides or short repeats without leaving the loop. Pro Bosque publishes them as the track's speed section.
03 · Behind the MuseumMuseum boundary and return
The loop passes the rear of the Museo Nacional de Antropología and turns back toward the gate. Traffic on Reforma is audible; the trees keep it out of sight.

Weather profile

What the sky
is likely to do.

High-altitude city weather. Mornings are cool year-round; the rainy season runs roughly June to September with afternoon storms, and the track drains slowly after rain. Winter mornings can be near freezing before sunrise.
