The experience

The round trip is 18.28 km with 1,816 m of gain, all of it in the first nine kilometres. Dirt track to the canal, then ridge, then bare crest, then scree. No water after km 1.9, no shade after Alto del Naranjo, and the summit is at 2,750 m.

It is the biggest climb you can reach from a Santiago bus stop on a Saturday morning: the park runs a free shuttle from Plaza San Enrique at 8:00 and 9:00, and the summit sits 1,700 m above the city's highest neighbourhoods.

The park is one of a network of privately held parks in the Santiago foothills managed by the Asociación Parque Cordillera, which sells day entries and camping and runs the Saturday shuttle. Cerro Provincia stands at the north end of the Sierra de Ramón, the range that walls the city on the east; its summit is the classic first big climb for Santiago mountaineers and the training hill for the city's ultrarunners.

Where the sources disagreeParque Puente Ñilhue is open only on weekends and holidays, 8:00 to 18:00, and the operator sets last-entry times by objective: 9:00 for Cerro Provincia, 12:00 for Alto del Naranjo, 13:00 for Vallecito, and 14:00 for any trekking. Adults pay 3,450 pesos; over-60s and children 2,300. No pets, no drones, no fire, and rangers can turn away anyone without proper shoes. Wikiexplora warns that a real possibility is night falling before you are down; carry a headtorch even on a summer run. Winter brings snow on the upper crest and summer brings heat and dehydration on a ridge with no water above the canal. The San Carlos de Apoquindo approach, through the Universidad Católica sports complex, is longer and has no water at all.

Central Chile mountain weather. Snow on the upper crest from late autumn to spring; dry heat and no shade in summer, when the guides warn of dehydration. Spring is the recommended season. Clear winter days give the best views of El Plomo but need spikes above the pass.

The Asociación Parque Cordillera opens Puente Ñilhue at 8:00 on weekends and holidays and sets the last entry for Cerro Provincia at 9:00, for Alto del Naranjo at 12:00 and for Vallecito at 13:00. The gate closes at 18:00.
