500 m of gain in 2.6 km, on loose earth and rock, with no water and no shade above the scrub. Wikiexplora rates it technically very easy; the descent on loose material is where ankles go.

The experience

Outlife's numbers: 2.6 km and 500 m of gain to the summit. The last third is loose earth and rock where the walkers' 1 h 30 becomes a scramble. No water on the route.

The hill is private land with a free public park on it. That arrangement is why the entrance moved in 2025 and why the trailhead in every older guide is now a locked gate.

The hill is the northern wall of Santiago's eastern communes and the training climb of the city's trail runners, who use it for repeats before the season in the cordillera.

Where the sources disagreeThe Vía Roja entrance, the trailhead in most guides and GPS tracks, closed for good on 30 November 2025; the landowner had asked for years that it be shut because of the volume of visitors. The entrance is now Vía Café, the last street of Lo Curro before the old gate, about 300 m higher, with a prepared path and a small car park that fills on weekends. The Clinic reported on 7 August 2026 that the Municipalidad de Vitacura has not confirmed whether this access is definitive. Outlife, which administers the park, lists free entry and hours of 08:00 to 20:00 in spring and summer. The summit altitude is published as both 1,635 m and 1,680 m. Wikiexplora reports robberies on the hill and advises against being there between 14:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays; two minors lost the route and their phone signal in June 2026 and were found by Bomberos. No water anywhere on the route.

Route sections

01 · The Extra 300Vía Café gate to the old Vía Roja line
The prepared path from the new gate joins the old route from Vía Roja, about 300 m above the car park that closed on 30 November 2025. It is the only easy running of the day.
02 · The Scrub LadderOld junction to the top of the scrub
Switchbacks on compact earth through Mediterranean scrub. Runnable with short strides on a cool morning; a walk in January heat.
03 · Loose and SteepTop of the scrub to the summit
The path turns to loose material and rock outcrops. Hands on the last steps. Nobody runs this section up; the question is how much you run it down.
04 · The Dust DescentSummit to Vía Café
Fifty minutes for walkers, less for a runner willing to slide. Stay on the ascent line; the south-east face is not a route.

Weather profile

What the sky
is likely to do.

Mediterranean climate at 1,000 to 1,635 m. Summer afternoons are hot and shadeless above the scrub; winter mornings can bring frost and, after a front, snow on the summit.

30 NOV 2025

The day the trailhead in every guidebook closed

Outlife announced that the Vía Roja access would close on 30 November 2025 after a one-month trial of the new Vía Café entrance, to improve the safety of users and neighbours and protect the surroundings. Older guides and GPS tracks still start at the closed gate.
