The experience

The Oxyoquet trail gains 430 m in 2.5 km and comes back the same way. The steps are steep and the ground is wet under fog for most of the year. There is no view at the top; the forest is the point.

The trail is an interpretive route with stations and a question booklet. It sits inside the first reserve in Mexico bought specifically for conservation, administered by Pronatura Sur since the 1980s.

Oxyoquet is the Tsotsil name for the volcano; the word refers to the three stones that hold a comal over the fire, for the three craters. The reserve is private, owned and run by Pronatura Sur, and borders the state-protected Huitepec-Los Alcanfores area. The road below it leads to San Juan Chamula.

Where the sources disagreeAccess is not reliably open to the public. Visitors report being turned away without a guide in December 2023, a closure until further notice in September 2024, and a guide-only rule in March 2026, and AllTrails states the interactive trail is restricted to visitors with a certified guide. Pronatura Sur's page lists hours of 9:00 to 16:00 with a donation at the gate and offers guides by reservation at 967 678 0542. Call before you go and expect to book a guide. The reserve also suspended night owl tours over their impact on the birds. The trail ends at a shelter, not the summit; the path that continues up the ridge is outside the reserve trail. No pets.

The first reserve in Mexico bought specifically for conservation

A group of urban conservationists led by Pronatura acquired 136 hectares of forest on the volcano's flank, a private reserve that predates every public protected area in the Altos de Chiapas.
